The Smile series battery systems use power meters to measure and controll the energy flows in a home.
The type and number of power meters you should use depends on the way you want to connect the Smile battery system to your electrical installation, if you want to have full UPS functionality (including grid isolation), the battery system you are installing and your grid connection.
The Smile B3 is a single phase battery storage system that can only be AC coupled. This means you have an existing PV inverter, since the B3 only houses a battery inverter. It has no hybrid inverter.If you want to install the B3 in a single phase grid, you can use the 2 CT clamps that come with the B3 system. One CT clamp should be installed directly over the AC output wire of the existing PV inverter, the second CT clamp should be installed over the incoming grid phase line, before the first consumers.
Although the Smile B3 is a single phase battery storage system, it can be used in a 3 phase setup. You would then need ADL-3000 power meters. These are EnFluRi power meters. They will not only measure, but also balance between the different phases.
The Smile 5 is a single phase battery storage system with a hybrid inverter. This means you can either retrofit it to your existing PV installation (AC coupling), or you can directly connect your PV panels to the Smile 5 inverter (it has 2 MPPT ports with MC4 connectors) – this is what we call DC coupling, or you can do both at the same time (we call this hybrid coupling – not to confuse with a hybrid inverter).
For DC coupling you should use 1 power meter at the grid side, before any loads. The meter will measure consumption or feed in, the production from the PV panels is measured within the system.
For AC and hybrid coupling you will need a 2nd power meter. The system needs to get a reading on the power produced by the existing PV inverter.
We use the ADL-3000 3 phase power meters. They are fitted with plug connectors for an easy install. You will need the space of 7 modules in your switch cabinet per meter.
Although the Smile 5 is a single phase battery storage system, it can be used in a 3 phase setup by using these ADL-3000 power meters. They will not only measure, but also balance between the different phases.

The Smile T10 is a 3 phase battery storage system containing a hybrid inverter. In the same way as with the Smile 5 system you can either choose for AC coupling, DC coupling, or a hybrid setup. In the same way as with the Smile 5, you should use 1 ADL-3000 power meter for DC coupling, and 2 ADL-3000 power meters for DC and hybrid coupling.
Please note that the ADL-3000 has a maximum current specification of 80 A. Make sure your connection doesn’t exceed this value !
The Backup-Box is a device to safely switch the grid on and off. This device should be installed if you want to run your complete installation in (semi) island mode in case of a power outage on the grid. It also offers phase priority selection. And it is also a power meter. This means you can replace the grid side power meter with a backup box.
Do note that the power box can handle 30A as a maximum !
