Alpha-ESS powers Africa’s largest solar & energy storage project for a hospital

Alpha-ESS has worked with exclusive partner SunPower Innovations to help the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS) to commission a large off-grid solar project to reduce its power bill by 60% hence the decrease in health care cost and increase the chances for patients.

Built in 2012 in the capital city of Accra, Ghana, the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital is an ultra-modern 50-bed specialty facility providing services to adult and pediatric patients in need of orthopedic care.  It is specializing in complex spine and joint replacement surgeries.

The 700kWh Hybrid Solar System with 1MWh Battery Storage has been touted by experts as the largest in Africa for a hospital.

During the day, the electricity generated by the photovoltaic panels power the medical equipment and the rest of the hospital and the surplus power is stored in the energy storage systems. When there is PV at night, the energy storage system automatically switches to continuously supply power to the loads and the entire energy storage system guarantees an uninterruptible 24/7 power supply.

Alpha-ESS’s remote monitoring and maintenance platform, the AlphaCloud platform can help customers monitor the system’s operating status in real time through web pages or mobile APPs, remotely set various functions, perform remote software upgrades for inverters, EMS, BMS, etc. and do debugging work.
